PHOTOPOCENE WITH BRITTONIE FLETCHER - EPISODE 21

This podcast is a fantastic way to welcome 2022.

Join me as I chat with Brittonie Fletcher, an educator and artist based in Edinburgh, as we take a riveting and fun rollercoaster ride through her photographic and personal story.

It’s a joyous conversation about tenacity as Brittonie’s superpower, the colour purple, coping with distraction and life’s curveballs, and even making a darkroom in a pub cellar.

We discuss Brittonie’s eco-darkroom workshops with The Penumbra Foundation and Stills in Edinburgh and how terminology in the eco-sector is used to imply ‘green’ positivity and how we reconcile this in our photographic practice.

The importance of how photography melds art and science, how politics and punk influence Brittonie’s creative process, the use of materials in artistic creation, and how being experimental is an intrinsic element of how she creates photographic art are all touched on.

photopocene with Nettie Edwards - Episode 20

This podcast truly warmed my eco-conscious photography heart.

Thank you to Nettie Edwards for sharing her photographic story from her early impression of the medium when a youngster as "boring" to her adoration of it and nature through her love of the anthotype and chlorophyll processes.

We touched on Nettie's personal mental health experience, discussing how it became a catalyst for her changed view of, and passion for, photography and a new conduit for sharing her creativity. We also talked about how working in her garden and allotment provides myriad sources of inspiration and material for her fascinating creations.

Describing herself as a "scavenger", Nettie's work merges, mixes and melds flora to found items to reflect on topics such as our relationship with light, family heritage and hidden history, social commentary and diverse communities, and so much more.

And thanks to the cat for making no demands. ;-)

Photopocene with Will Templeton - Episode 19

It is great to speak with Will Templeton about his work relating to people and the world in which we live.

We met via my 'day job' with Westcountry Rivers Trust when we arranged for him to photograph some of the team for his upcoming exhibition, Ways and Means. Supported by The Rivers Trust too, this body of work will help showcase the importance of our rivers' health across England through the stories of those who live on, work along, and simply love them.

On his website, Will states that he is "using the medium of photography to drive curiosity, inspire minds, evoke action and create lasting development that restores the balance of humans in nature".

Photopocene with Steffie de Gaetano - Episode 18

steffie.jpg

What an absolutely fascinating conversation I had with Steffie de Gaetano.

Steffie is a Dutch-Italian interdisciplinary researcher who works at the intersection of architecture, art, and anthropology.

Her current work Permeance investigates the River Dommel in relation to her heritage, colonialism, extractivism, and contamination as a means to approach the entanglements of earthly life.

PHOTOPOCENE WITH ROBIN SHELTON - EPISODE 17

This episode is a delightful conversation with photographer Robin Shelton (do please excuse the little hiccup near the start where my question about how he started out in photography seems to have vanished - it's still great to learn about Robin's lifetime photo love inspired by his father).

We go on to discuss "making with meaning' and how this relates to his work, discover a mutual love of allotments (Robin has written a book all about life pottering around an allotment), how he partakes in "plant torture", plus his plans to highlight sewage pollution in our rivers and seas via a portrait series using the salt printing process.

But there's so much more to Robin's story, so listen along to find out: https://anchor.fm/photopocene

Photopocene with Maica Gugolati - Episode 15

I am truly privileged to be speaking with so many talented artists with such an array of photographic ideas and interpretations.

And this Photopocene podcast is no exception as I am joined by the researcher, curator and photographer, Maica Gugolati.

Immerse yourself in her wonderful soundscape before listening along to our conversation about her work.

Maica talks about her project, Floating Tropics, which creates questions about the 'industrialscape' on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Through this, she plays with the suggestion that all is not what it seems, that what we see has already been shaped for us and we are shaping what will be seen in the future.

Her collage images create fantastical other worlds and a "puzzle of fictionalities" - and this is all in relation to the oft-hidden extractive industries which play a big role in the economy and livelihoods of people on these islands.

Photopocene with Susa Solero - Episode 13

photopocene cover square.jpeg

I am delighted to be joined by Susa Solero for this episode of the Photopocene podcast.

Based in Germany, Susa has been detailing litter to help encourage people to think about the negative impact of littering.

We speak about how she makes use of time on train journeys to create painterly landscapes and her love for minimalism and abstract forms.

Although Susa doesn't class herself as a professional photographer, her strong style and interpretation across varied topics most certainly shows her eye for creating images to contemplate, both visually and through her creative use of words.

Photopocene with Jonathan Straight - Episode 12

photopocene cover square.jpeg

I'm joined on this episode by street and documentary photographer, Jonathan Straight.

Jonathan doesn't specifically use his photography to raise awareness of environmental issues (his day job is heavily related to things such as water resources and waste management) but his topics do reflect or connect to them.

We chat about his latest photo book Vegans in Iceland. It's a great insight into the country, its vegans, and discussions around the benefit of a plant-based diet.

We also chat about the ethics of street photography, how Jonathan gets so close to his subjects and how, on occasion, he has remained in touch with some of them like the woman from Russia who he still meets occasionally for a coffee since their random meeting on a London street some years ago.
